How to Survive the Winter Blues

Updated: Apr 14, 2021

In the Northern Hemisphere, we welcome winter on December 21, and for many, this is the start of the most challenging part of the year. This year we are doing it COVID-19 style, so the winter blues may feel that much stronger.

Winter is not meant to be bad if we just allow ourselves to surrender to its wisdom. Just like the summer is the time for prosperity and abundance, and fall is the time for transformation, winter is the time for introspection and reflection. We have been gifted this period to slow down and seek inner peace and wisdom. It is in this silence and stillness that we find the guidance, motivation, and courage to begin a new chapter once spring arrives.

With the difficulty of this entire year, we might have to work a little harder over the next couple of months to simply get through them. If you want to beat the winter blues, take extra care of your body, mind, and soul.

Our physical body is a vessel that both influences and reflects our thoughts and emotions. Taking care of the body is always the first step to wellness. Many of our emotions are created in the gut and are directly influenced by what we put into our bodies. Staying active, choosing healthy and balanced meals, and taking vitamins is an important step to feeling great.

Our mind is one of the rare things we have full control over. It is easy to allow it to run wild and create scenarios in our head that may not be in our best interest. Ultimately, what we focus on we invite in, and that’s just the law of attraction. Join an online class or event and find a community of like-minded individuals who can positively contribute to your day and life. If you’re going through a difficult period, invest in a session with a professional who can help shift your energy and empower you with some new perspectives.

Add aromatherapy to your life and diffuse some emotionally uplifting oils, such as those from the citrus family or deeply calming ones like lavender or chamomile.

Take some time to connect to your inner you. Create a daily self-care ritual where you sprinkle just a little extra love on you. Do not forget to love the parts you don’t find very loving because they need it the most. Let yourself be exactly who you are. This is a time of inner reflection, so allow yourself to do just that.

Above all, remember that everything in life is temporary. Tomorrow always brings new possibilities. If today is a hard day, tomorrow doesn’t have to be. Take this time to rest, go inward, and reflect. Observe where you are and where you want to be. Set some goals for yourself! Spring is just around the corner, so get ready for those new beginnings.
