SS21: A Season of Juxtaposition

Updated: May 3, 2021

Globally, fashionists experienced the new collections differently this past year. Fragmented seasons of juxtaposition emerged as designers strived to navigate, rejuvenate and find levity in the virtual realm that encompassed the fashion week runways of the world.

Opposing influences often possess a shared quality. This season is all about applauding the diverse individuality of today rather than dictating an impossible ideal. It’s about embracing change and approaching life with lively, fresh views.

This is what’s trending, setting the scene and some of our favorite trends to wear right now.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME

More is definitely more! Take up as much space as possible - it’s all about pushing limits and being larger than life. Whimsical and romantic, the pouf sleeve has become a wardrobe mainstay in the last few seasons. The SS21 versions include everything from girlish charm vibes, to a more intense attitude, as billowy, cascading proportions made their debut.

STAGE FIVE CLINGER

Banish the bad habits we’ve all grown accustomed to. It’s time to ditch the sweats, leggings and slouchy shapes- second skins are in! This ultra-flattering trend takes form in all silhouettes. Think stretch fabrics, slinky knits and form fitting garments.

LEVITY

An uplifting wardrobe remix! Joyful, bright colorful pops of colors in psychedelic prints, textures, and vintage inspired graphics are encouraged in all ensembles – especially dresses. Balance prints, paring down accessories. Let your outfit speak for itself!

THE CUT OUT MODERN BLACK DRESS

The little black dress has been reinvented for SS21. Failsafe, this contemporary go-to features strategically placed cut-outs and peekaboo details with a modernist look and feel. A definite statement piece.

WE WEAR SHORT SHORTS

Long legs are the silhouette of the season. Versatile and feminine, pair micro-mini skirts and

super-short shorts with this season’s most sought after footwear – Greek goddess sandals, fashion flats, outdoor house slippers, embellished heels and scarf-tie platforms.

POWER SURGE

Wide leg, roomy statement making trousers sauntered down the European and US runways, this trend is very wearable, blending comfort and style. A throw-back to the 80’s power-pant craze, guaranteed to bring the drama to any occasion.

CLASSIC CLAD

Fret not - for those of us not wanting to venture too far on the trend spectrum, classic, sleek tailoring is always in. We can’t stress enough the importance of investing in quality wardrobe staples - readily available at a moment’s notice, for any occasion.

GO FANCY FISH…NET!

Transparency - chiffon, tulle and anything mesh made exuberant appearances on the runway in many different forms. Oversized, exaggerated and embellished fishnets were used as over and underlays adding depth and detail. Edgy takes the place of lace.

THE HUE’S WHO

Optimistic with a sunny disposition. This season, we see a sea of daring, vivid colors in a wide array of fabrics and textures. Pastels are worn as neutrals, and red prevails as a microtrend. Crisp whites, sunshine yellows, vibrant orange and sunset pinks prevail in SS221.
