STYLE VERSUS FASHION
We all have access to fashion. Fashion is about trends, wardrobe, and
accessories, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Style goes much deeper.
It’s a creative process that begins with you, a blank canvas that ends with
an expression of who you are, or who you want to be.
The creative process, a.k.a “styling”, can be learned. At first, like any skill, it
may feel forced, but in time, it will feel like a natural instinct.
HOW TO STYLE YOURSELF LIKE A PRO
ELEMENTS OF STYLE
Putting together one’s own look requires certain elements, all of which are
undividedly important. These elements include:
1. Knowledge of Current Trends
2. Introspection & Extrospection
3. Quality Matters
4. Visualization & The Mirror Test
5. Self-Care
1.KNOWLEDGE OF CURRENT TRENDS
Just because a fashionable item is trending, that doesn’t necessarily mean
it’s the right look for you. However, it is important to know what’s hot for the
season so that you can choose what to adopt and what to exclude.
TOP WINTER MUST HAVES:

SOMETHING PINK
Whether it’s a flamboyant head-to-toe outfit or a stand-out accessory,
be sure to pick up something shocking pink this season.
COLOURED SUITS
Vibrant, electric colors take a front seat with full blown coloured
power suits juxtaposed with simple silhouettes.
DISCO VIBES
Short, sexy and covered in sequins, this trend is about celebrating the
good times and not being afraid to shine.

forefront of fashion-forward this season.
ANIMAL PRINTS
Take a walk on the wild side with an array of animal prints that bring
you back to nature.
BLACK ON BLACK
Goth inspired, vampish looks, interesting cuts and lustrous fabrics
resonate with the truth of the saying: women who wear black live
colourful lives.
SHEER FABRICS
See-through fabrics and chards of lace blow an air of the whimsical
with a certain sex appeal.
FASHION AS ART
Surrealist forms and illusive images are here to push you outside of
your comfort zone and explore new dimensions.
MAXIMALIST COATS
The ultimate staple piece this season is a long overcoat that can
easily go over any outfit. Any shade will do, from neutrals to
exuberant pops of color.
PREPPY
Back-to-school inspired looks are on the scene with pleated plaid
skirts, neckties and the infamous peter pan collars.
FAUX FUR
Messy shags adding texture with furry coats in fun colors is the way
to go this season.
2. INTROSPECTION & EXTROSPECTION
Introspection: it’s important to dig deep and ask yourself what kind of image
you want to portray. Do you want to convey class, professionalism or
rebellion? Extrospection: different occasions call for different looks so it’s
wise to pay attention to context when you’re dressing. Whether it’s for work,
leisure, or holiday, the key to style is dressing for the part.
3. QUALITY MATTERS
Having an eye for style when shopping for fashion items means looking out
for craftsmanship details like stitching grade, tailoring, material integrity,
and overall aesthetic. After all, the items in your closet are the tools you
use to create a stylized look. If you begin with wardrobe and accessories
that have merit, then you’re already starting off on the right foot.
4. VISUALIZATION & THE MIRROR TEST
When outfit-shopping for the season, or when preparing for a particular
event, I suggest photographing items you’re planning to put together and
keeping them in a digital album. This will give you a bird’s eye view of the
whole picture to ensure your look has a synchronicity and balance of color,
proportion and texture.
Finally, put your outfit to The Mirror Test. Get fully dressed from top to
bottom, take an honest look at yourself, and ensure that you love what you
see. Analyze the details and ask yourself if they flow. Add, remove, or
change items until you’re completely satisfied with the overall look.
Dressing with purpose means you’ve taken the time to make choices.
5. SELF-CARE
Self care plays a significant role in the art of style. Things as simple as
nicely manicured nails, or picking a lip colour that’s trending for the season
make a difference. Where possible, I truly recommend consulting with
fitness coaches, beauty care professionals such as hair stylists,
aestheticians, and make-up artists. Doing so will create a stream of
confidence from the inside out.
STYLE IS AN ATTITUDE
Your body language determines how others perceive you. If you practice
these steps to styling like a pro, you will gain an increasing
self-assuredness which will change your overall demeanor in a positive
way. Dressing with purpose, backed with a knowledge and in-depth effort to
create a look that works for you. is the key to exuding your own personal
style.
